Gary Lineker: will he or won’t he?

So how did Leicester City do it?  How did they beat such high odds to become Premiership champions?

Dr Daniel Glaser (1) suggests it may be mainly thanks to their brains.  Neuroscientists and sports psychologists agree that the way a team imagines itself playing is just as important as the skills they possess.
There is increasing evidence that mental practice can improve physical performance.  In a famous experiment, a group of people were asked to lift their finger a thousand times – in their minds.  An instrument checked that they weren’t using any muscle force.  At the end of the experiment, they were able to lift more with their finger than those who had not done the mental exercise.
So Claudio Ranieri’s secret coaching strategy for his players, as well as all the physical fitness training he put them through, may have been what he got their brains to work on too.
Students for public examinations can use this same mental practice to help them perform well.
That said, what most of us are left wondering, after the Foxes’ remarkable achievement, is whether Gary Lineker will carry out his promise to present the first MOTD next season in his undies, now that Leicester City have won the Premiership!
