Parent Power – Break down the revision

Posted in News & Press  ·  16th May 2024

Breaking down revision into manageable chunks can make the workload seem less overwhelming and enhance retention. Research supports the effectiveness of spaced repetition in improving long-term memory retention (Cepeda et al., 2006). Additionally, studies have shown that students who engage in regular, spaced-out study sessions perform better than those who cram (Rohrer & Pashler, 2007).

How to Break Down Revision

1. Structured Plan:
Creating a structured plan is crucial. Use revision guides, past papers, and textbooks to map out a detailed revision schedule. Break subjects into smaller, manageable topics and tackle them one at a time. This approach can help prevent burnout and make the revision process more manageable.

2. Regular Reviews:
Regularly reviewing these smaller sections helps reinforce learning. The spaced repetition method, which involves reviewing information at increasing intervals, has been proven to enhance long-term retention. Tools like flashcards, apps, and regular quizzes can support this process.

3. Achievements:
Celebrating small milestones can provide a sense of achievement and keep motivation high. Acknowledging progress, no matter how small, helps build confidence and encourages continued effort.

4. Mix of Study Techniques:
Incorporate a variety of study techniques such as summarising notes, teaching the material to someone else, and using visual aids like mind maps. Research shows that mixing different study methods can improve understanding and retention (Dunlosky et al., 2013).

5. Healthy Study Environment:
Ensure a conducive study environment. This includes a quiet, well-lit space free from distractions. Having all necessary materials on hand and keeping the study area organised can help maintain focus.

6. Balanced Routine:
Encourage a balanced routine that includes regular breaks, physical activity, and sufficient sleep. Studies have shown that regular physical activity can boost cognitive function and reduce stress (Hillman et al., 2008). Adequate sleep is also critical for memory consolidation (Stickgold, 2005).

Parental Support:
Parents can play a vital role in supporting their child’s revision efforts. Assist in organising study materials, creating the revision plan, and ensuring adherence to the schedule. Providing encouragement and understanding can help reduce stress and boost your child’s confidence.
