Exam technique

GCSE preparation

For Year 11 students in April and May

This workshop is packed with practical strategies to help Year 11 students succeed in their GCSEs. It focuses on applying exam technique under pressure. A powerful and timely session that supports students right up to their final exams.

Key Aims

  • To understand and respond to command words effectively, interpreting what each word asks for to structure answers and maximise marks
  • To guide students in finding online command word resources, providing a companion tool to support them while completing past papers at home
  • To explore the examiner’s perspective, showing how mark schemes are used to assess answers and helping students understand where marks are gained and where they're lost
  • To use examiner reports effectively, analysing common mistakes, studying exemplar answers, and applying examiners’ feedback to guide revision and improve performance in future exams
  • To control the controllables in exam preparation, focusing on what you can manage—such as revision, practice, and routines—while letting go of what you cannot influence, such as unexpected questions or external pressures.
  • To create an effective pre-exam game plan, preparing the night before by organising materials, reviewing key points, and getting enough rest, and setting up the morning of the exam with a healthy breakfast, a calm routine, and mental focus strategies.
  • To manage moments of going blank in an exam, using strategies such as pausing to breathe, moving on to other questions, and returning later with a clear mind to maximise performance
  • To build a strong case for sitting past papers, highlighting how they improve time management, reduce fear of the unknown, increase familiarity with different question types, and help students get used to real exam conditions.
  • To manage exam nerves and stress effectively, using strategies such as deep breathing, positive self-talk, and structured preparation to maintain focus and perform at one’s best
  • To maintain wellbeing during exam preparation, prioritising exam fitness through adequate sleep, regular exercise, and a balanced diet to support focus, memory, and overall performance
  • To boost motivation just before exams, by setting clear short‑term goals, visualising success, using positive self‑talk, and rewarding each achieved milestone to sustain focus and momentum. Research shows that positive thinking enhances self‑efficacy and drives greater effort
