Parent Power – Limit Social Media and Screen Time

Posted in News & Press  ·  10th May 2024

Excessive screen time, particularly on social media, can increase anxiety and distract from studying. Research indicates that high levels of social media use are associated with increased stress and decreased academic performance (Twenge, 2017). Mobile phone usage, in particular, has become a very modern problem, contributing to digital distractions and mental health issues among young people. By managing screen time effectively, parents can help their children focus better and reduce stress.

Limiting screen time

1. Set boundaries:
Encourage your child to limit their use of digital devices during study periods. Establish specific times for study and relaxation to create a balanced routine. For example, designate study hours where phones and other digital devices are turned off or placed in another room. Remember, we may think we can multitask but we can’t!

2. Alternative activities:
Promote alternative activities such as reading, outdoor play, or hobbies to reduce digital fatigue. Encouraging your child to engage in non-screen activities can help them develop new interests and skills while giving their minds a break from digital stimuli.

3. Screen-free periods:
Implement screen-free periods during the day to help maintain focus and reduce stress. This could include having meals without devices, setting aside time in the evening for family activities, or having tech-free mornings to start the day positively.

4. Model healthy screen habits:
Parents can be as bad, if not worse, than their children for mobile phone use/dependency. Parents can model healthy screen habits by limiting their own use of digital devices and prioritising offline activities. Demonstrating a balanced approach to technology use can encourage children to adopt similar habits.

5. Create a family routine:
Establish a family routine that prioritises offline activities. This might include regular family outings, game nights, or shared hobbies that everyone can enjoy without screens. Creating these shared experiences can strengthen family bonds and reduce reliance on digital devices for entertainment.

UK mental health support charities:

  • YoungMinds: Offers support and resources for young people experiencing mental health issues, including advice on managing screen time and social media use.
  • Mind: Provides information and support for managing mental health, including strategies for reducing screen time.
  • Childline: A free, private, and confidential service where children and young people can get help with issues related to screen time and digital wellbeing.

By setting clear boundaries and promoting a balanced lifestyle, parents can help their children manage their screen time more effectively. This can lead to improved focus, reduced anxiety, and better academic performance.
